Glendale, California–In a city which boasts the largest concentration of Armenians anywhere outside of the Republic of Armenia, it was fitting that Phoenicia restaurant in Glendale was the venue for an evening reception for Armen Liloyan, Armenia’s Consul General in Los Angeles.
The event was held on February 22, 2007, and despite rainy weather, over 70 members and friends of the association attended to meet the Consul General and enjoy delicious Mediterranean cuisine, courtesy of Phoenicia owner Ara Kalfayan.
As an unexpected treat, Yervand Zakharyan, the Mayor of Yerevan, the capitol of the Republic of Armenia, was touring Los Angeles, and attended the event. Frank Zerunyan, Chairman of the Board of the Armenian Bar Association, was the master of ceremonies and welcomed those in attendance on behalf of the organization. He invited Consul General Liloyan speak to the attendees. The Consul General thanked the Armenian Bar for its invitation and its good work.
Mayor Zakharyan was introduced by Senior Deputy City Attorney of Glendale, Lucy Varpetian. The Mayor offered words of encouragement to the Armenian Bar and news from Yerevan. Varpetian is a former Executive Director of the Armenian Bar, and was an organizer of the reception. Both Liloyan and Zakharyan were presented a unique gift consisting of artwork by Seeroon Yeretzian.

Zerunyan also took the opportunity to congratulate former ArmenBar Chairman and founding member Judge Zaven V. Sinanian on his recent appointment as Site Supervising Judge of the Burbank Courthouse of the North Central District court of Los Angeles County. Sinanian has only been on the bench since 2002, but has been a rising star in the Los Angeles County judiciary. His appointment by J. Stephen Czuleger, Presiding Judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, took effect early this year. Sinanian was also awarded a Signature Yeretzian art piece in honor of his achievement.
Liloyan was appointed by Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian on October 30, 2006 to his current post in Los Angeles. He received his undergraduate degree from Yerevan State University and Master’s degree from the London Diplomatic Academy.
He joined the Armenian Foreign Ministry in 1995 and worked in the European Department. From 1998 to 2002, he served at the Armenian Embassy in Great Britain. Since 2002 he had been the head of the European Union Division of the European Department and was instrumental in the process of developing Armenia’s Action Plan within European Neighborhood Policy.
